In order to determine whether ulcerative colitis is present and to distinguish the causes of the patient's symptoms from other bowel diseases, the treating doctor performs a number of examinations. They include taking a blood sample, to check the inflammation values, a colonoscopy, to find characteristics that differ from Crohn's disease, as well as a stool sample, to rule out infections and inflammatory markers as well as blood in the stool. Furthermore, imaging procedures, e.g. ultrasound, MRI and CT, can be used to obtain a detailed picture of neighbouring organs and tissue.
