Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. But what does this disease actually do to the body?
The chronic inflammatory bowel disease ulcerative colitis is characterised by inflammation and ulceration in the colonic mucosa. The inflammation often originates in the rectum and the lower part of the colon. The inflammation spreads from there to the whole of the colon. This means the inflammation is mostly limited to the intestinal mucosa.
