Spondyloarthritis is an umbrella term for various chronic inflammatory autoimmune diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. Axial spondyloarthritis is the most common of them and affects the axial skeleton. This refers to all bones in the longitudinal axis of the human body - i.e. cranial bones, laryngeal skeleton, spine and rib cage. Bekhterev's disease, also known as ankylosing spondylitis (vertebral inflammation causing stiffness) among specialists is a known subform. Typical affected areas are the joints between the sacrum and ilium, generally between the vertebrae, the intervertebral discs and entheses.
