Ankylosing spondylitis

FAQ

There is currently no cure for ankylosing spondylitis. However, there are some very effective therapies which relieve the symptoms and delay the progression of the disease. Basic treatment is based on a combination of medication, targeted exercise and a generally healthy, active lifestyle.

There are no specific dietary recommendations for ankylosing spondylitis. However, avoiding saturated fats and meat is recommended as the fatty acids they contain promote inflammation. Products with a high sugar content may also have a negative effect.

The average life expectancy of those affected is hardly any different to that of healthy people. However, complications such as organ involvement and years of anti-inflammatory medication may shorten your lifespan. In any case, you should go for regular check-ups with a doctor so that countermeasures can be taken in good time.

Please always speak with the doctor treating you before you stop taking your medication or reduce the dose – otherwise, regression will often occur, which, in the worst case, your current medication may no longer be able to control.
