In order to identify whether someone is suffering from acne inversa, the treating doctor will firstly perform a physical examination and ask those potentially affected about their personal and family medical history. If there is reasonable suspicion, skin and blood samples will be taken; imaging procedures such as ultrasound or MRI may also be used to make a diagnosis. This will allow the doctor to identify whether inflammation parameters are elevated, which bacteria are involved in the inflammation and how deep and widespread inflammatory foci and fistula tracts are under the skin.
